Technical Details, Protections & Ruleset
Protective Gear Requirements
- Mask: It is mandatory that the mask follows CEN2 standards. A minimum resistance of 1600 Newtons is mandatory for the bib. It is essential that the mask is not damaged, dented, cracked or rusted.
- Mask Cover: This padded protection protects the top, side, and back of the head. The back of the neck must be covered by the mask cover and incorporate protection (rigid slats, thick foam, etc.) to absorb impacts.
- Jacket: The jacket must be specifically designed for the practice of HEMA. A stand-up collar with a blade catcher provides additional protection against thrusting and is therefore recommended. A minimum resistance of 350 Newtons is mandatory.*
*For both men and women, jackets with a resistance of less than 800 Newton must be completed with a rigid bib under the jacket. In addition, it is strongly recommended in this case to have reinforcements in sensitive areas. - Pants: Pants must be specifically designed for HEMA practice. A minimum resistance of 350 Newtons is mandatory.
- Shell/pelvic protection: A rigid shell suitable for combat sports and martial arts is mandatory. It must be worn under pants.
- Gorget: This rigid, padded protection must cover the throat and is mandatory. Clavicle protection is also recommended.
- Leg guards and knee pads: These rigid protections are mandatory. They must cover the shins and the knee. They must go down to the ankles, and protect the sides of the knee.
- Elbow pads: These rigid protections must cover the elbow and are mandatory.
Please note that any equipment such as steel armor, armor gauntlets, chain mail or any equipment involving steel parts (except swords and buckle parts) is strictly prohibited. - Breastplate: This rigid plastic protection which covers the entire chest, and if possible the ribs, is mandatory.
Process of the tournaments
1/ Pool Phase « first leg ».
- Round Robin Pools (everyone meets everyone in their pool)
- A defeat is equivalent to -2 (or -3 if it is a defeat by double touch) points
- A victory earns +1 point
- A draw earns 0 points (lack of commitment may be penalized by a defeat for each competitor)
- Matches will have a maximum duration of 1 minute.
- At the end of this phase, players are ranked according to their results.
2/ Pool Phase « return leg » where the competitors will be distributed according to their ranking from the first phase.
- This phase is similar to the first.
- The compositions of the groups are made via the rankings of the first phase.
- The firsts of each group of phase 1 are grouped together for phase 2
- The lasts of each group from phase 1 are grouped together for phase 2
- Round Robin Pools (everyone meets everyone in their pool)
- A defeat is equivalent to -2 (or -3 if it is a defeat by double touch) points
- A victory earns +1 point
- A draw earns 0 points (lack of commitment may be penalized by a defeat for each competitor)
- Matches will have a maximum duration of 1 minute.
- At the end of this phase the players are ranked according to their results and the three best in the general ranking goes to the final phase.
3/ A direct elimination phase where the last survivor will be declared the winner.
- During this phase, being hit is equivalent to being eliminated.
- Only the best three in the general classification advance to this phase.
- The second and third play a semi-final, the first goes directly to the final.
- If during the half, all players are eliminated then the first one is declared the winner of the tournament.
- In this case, to sort-out second and third place, the round is restarted until one of the fighters gains the advantage over the other.
- If during the half, all players are eliminated then the first one is declared the winner of the tournament.
